English 9 Course Description
Course-long studies
Every
week for the duration of the course, students will cover separate grammar and vocabulary units and will be assessed weekly
to track progress. We will also be working the entire semester on improving our expository writing. We will concentrate on
purpose, structure, and tone while reading assorted selections and then write our own expository pieces by following specific
organizational structures.
1st Term
Novel study--We will read Lord
of the Flies as a class. Also, students will be required to read four novels independently and in small groups within
the course of the semester.
Short Fiction--We will read and analyze a variety of short stories, connecting
the themes and characters to our own lives.
2nd Term
Classic literature--We will read
“Romeo and Juliet”, discuss key themes, and write a literary analysis.
Public speaking--We will choose a
topic of interest, research and organize information, and conclude this unit by creating and delivering a multimedia presentation.

English 10 Course Outline
Short Fiction--We will read and analyze a variety of

focus and add meaning to our reading.
Nonfiction—We will concentrate on purpose, structure, and tone while reading
assorted selections and then write our own nonfiction pieces by following specific structures.
Classic literature--We
will read “A Raisin in the Sun”, discuss key themes, and write a literary analysis.
Vocabulary study--We
will cover a unit each week ending with a quiz on Friday over the unit's words.
Grammar study—We will work
daily to master all areas of grammar, usage, and mechanics. Assessments will be used weekly to track progress.
Novel--We
will read
To Kill a Mockingbird as a class. Also, students will be required to read four novels independently in
the course of the semester.

English 11 Course Description
This course is a study of American literature and composition. The
writing lessons will enable students to develop skills in composition, written expression, and usage and mechanics. The research
paper will be one of many mandatory assignments that will project mastery of analytical writing. The literature is an intense
examination of American literature. Vocabulary study is based on SAT vocabulary, along with the literary elements and additional
terms found in reading selections.
